Yet another delightful evening at Owen River Tavern. Deliciously prepared meals (Sweet and Sour Chicken / Hot and Spicy Pork) and extremely tidy motel accommodation is reason enough to return to Owen River Tavern time and time again. We have made this rest stop a regular on our trips from Nelson back to the West Coast. Much thanks to our...
John and I purchased the Owen River Tavern property in 1987. We spent many happy years, raised our children here and made many improvements on the property including the addition of 6 self contained motel units.
After 25 years we have reluctantly decided to sell, spend more time with family and do a bit of traveling around New Zealand.
Are you interested in buying a successful business in New Zealand? Combine this established hospitality enterprise with living in one of the most beautiful parts of the country and you have the Owen River Tavern.
The Owen River Tavern real estate property is sitting on 6.9 hectares (17 acres) of land (in two titles) located on the border of Kahurangi National Park, alongside the convergence of the Owen and Buller Rivers.
The business attracts campers, tourists, hunters and fishermen alike and the extensive River frontage offers exceptional views all along the Buller river.
Being positioned on State Highway 6, the main arterial route connecting Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson, Tasman and West Coast regions, makes the property a very attractive rest stop for weary travellers throughout the year.
The property has a very large parking area and as such also attracts drivers of large commercial vehicles year round, providing good income through the Motel units and the tavern's restaurant facilities.
The Owen River area is famous for its activities:
- World-Class Fishing
- Superb Hunting and Caving
- White Water Rafting down the Buller River
- Wonderful Tramping
- Camping and Backpacking
Adjoining the Buller River along its entire length, the accompanying beautiful and extensive vistas offer the new owners a variety of ways to make the most of the property.
The motel accommodation side of business has a good occupancy rate throughout the year - servicing commercial drivers year round and enjoying a slice of the massive tourist trade in the warmer months. Expansion of the business would take advantage of the obvious existing demand.
Since 1997, the Hotel hosts a yearly sports competition in pig and deer hunting. The event attracts considerable sponsorship with over $5000 value in committed prizes.
The adjacent Owen River Recreation Reserve property; which also borders the river; is managed by the owners and provides another revenue stream paid to the owners by Tasman District Council. Monies are collected from visitors who stay at the campsite.
Room for Expansion
The 6.9 hectares (17 acres) of land offers tremendous development opportunities for the expansion of the business with the possibility of adding Fishing Huts, more Motel Units or a backpackers complex.
There are a number of potential sites perfectly positioned for luxury housing all overlooking the Buller River.
The Owen River Recreation Reserve property already includes six powered sites on the land and, subject to Tasman District Council's approval, many more could be installed making this area a marvellous camping site at very small outlay to the owners.
